UNCERTAINTY

COPING IN UNCERTAIN TIMES

I greet you with this prayer by the Apostle John: Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. (3 John 2 MSG)

In these uncertain times, we see different sides of people. There are none more worthy than those on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic who have to confront it each day, such as the doctors, nurses, technicians, cleaners, EMTs, fire fighters, police officers, grocery store workers, truck drivers, delivery people, volunteers, etc. To make their lives as easy as possible, it behooves the rest of us to do our part by obeying the instructions from the officials—primarily, to stay at home. For people at home, the Internet and News outlets offer lots of information on ways to cope and to help others. I have seen innovative ideas, funny things to do, and many heart-warming stories of people coming to the aid of others in different ways.

However, there are some people who are fearful and depressed by the situation. It is scary, but we cannot give in to that emotion. Reread the story of Job in the Bible. There is wickedness in the world, but as Christians we must not let anyone steal our joy! Don’t keep focusing on how bad things are—lift your eyes to the hills. When anxious feelings arise, bring a beautiful picture to mind or a favorite song and take several deep breaths.

I read about a group of people who prayed years ago for a city that was riddled with crime. They did this for a certain period and the crime went down. The group held the viewpoint that they were radiating fields of energy and their thoughts created the reality. You might be thinking that’s New Age stuff, yes…but it worked due to the power of prayer! So, let’s continue to pray for each other and everyone in this nation and around the world.

I leave you with words of the Apostle Paul, which I truly pray will sink into the depths of your heart. Read the following s-l-o-w-l-y:

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. (Philippians 4:6-9 MSG)

Be well and stay safe.
